As a continuation of last week's discussion of probiotics (go check it out if you haven't already) I wanted to talk about how you can feed those good bacteria in your horse's gut - prebiotics!
The best way I've found to think of prebiotics is fertilizer. Just adding them when there aren't already good bacteria won't really do much, but in the presence of good bacteria they promote their growth. Prebiotics are typically a plant-based compound specifically formulated for the bacteria your horse needs in his stomach, intestines and colon. As prebiotics are not alive, they tend to be less "fragile" than probiotics, meaning that more will reach their intended destination and have an effect. The increase in good bacteria can also help with horses who have an irritable stomach (this is partially why Sid gets HorseTech's GutWerks) as they help them digest more smoothly.
